A series of 12 ships built from 1939 to 1940. The ships were the last class of destroyers to feature a single engine room. They were also the last class of U.S. destroyers to enter service before World War II. The artillery arrangement was similar to that of the Mahan-class ships, but the Sims-class destroyers had their turrets placed on support rings and were equipped with a novel fire control system. During World War II, five ships were lost. The remainder were decommissioned in the post-war years.
